Finding The Right Web Host

The good news is that there are thousands of web hosting choices available, making prices very competitive. The bad news is . . . well, it's the same as the good news. Because of the vast number of web hosting companies, you could literally spend years researching all of your options.

Some are better than others, of course, but there is no "best" web host. Don't fall victim to "paralysis by analysis" by laboring over the multitude of choices.

Define your criteria and choose one that fits your needs. Reliability should extend not just to uptime, but also to customer service.

Before you choose a web host, email a question to their support department. The quality and timeliness of their response should give you a good idea of what to expect as a customer. If you had a problem with your website, would you want to wait 48 hours for help?

The amount of bandwidth you need will be determined by the number of visitors to your site and the size of the pages they view.

Buy only what you need. Some web hosting companies will even allow you to exceed your allotted bandwidth, especially if your average use is well below what your plan offers.

If not, you can usually upgrade to another plan with no interruption to your account. If you expect your site's traffic to be cyclical, the latter option might work for you.

When shopping for a web hosting service, be aware that there is no uniformity among plans from different web hosting providers. Some hosts are geared toward the larger and busier sites; others target the smaller ones.

Consequently, you may find that the starter package from one host is comparable to the deluxe plan from another.

Once you find a web hosting service that you believe is reliable, gives good support and offers what you need . . . go with it! Choosing a web host is not a lifetime commitment.

Quick Tips:

Enclose a business card promoting your website with each piece of outgoing mail.
Ask customers who frequently do business with you for a testimonial.
Promote your website URL offline on everything from bumper stickers to your answering machine message.
Want to reach the highest percentage of your target market?

Advertise in specialty publications including newspaper supplements devoted to a specific topic.
Marketing is crucial, but it doesn't always have to be serious.

Some of the most effective advertising campaigns rely on humor. Don't be afraid to make your customers laugh!
