Keyword Placement

Here are some prime spots for keywords:

Domain name:

Search engines assign a very high priority to keywords placed here.

File name:

Your page name may include several words. If you hyphenate the name, try to limit it to four words. Beyond that, search engines may see it as being done just for ranking benefit. This can result in a penalty against your site.

Title of page:

This appears at the top of the page being displayed by the browser. Your page title is specified between the title tags near the beginning of your text file. (A text file is used to create a web page. It's the page that contains the actual code that results in the web page that is displayed by your browser.)

Main heading or article title:

Search engines assign more importance to text in larger sizes. The same is true for bold text. Use both attributes in headings containing your keywords.

Here's how a search engine spider reads your page:

Look at the top left of your web page. What you see is probably what a search engine reads first. Anything at the bottom right is read last.

That assumption is based on the probability that your page is constructed in a standard layout of rows and columns. If your rows span several columns, or vice versa, that won't be the case.

Read the text file and you'll see exactly what the search engine reads.

Algorithms are subject to constant change, but content closer to the top of the page is likely to always be given more importance.

Keywords aside...

Never forget who you're really creating content for: You're writing for your website visitors.
