Learning How to Use HTML Table Tags

With tables, you can make your website anything you want it to be. You can make what you want go where you want.

Tables are divided into rows which can contain any number of sections called cells. A single cell can be a small square with a photo in the background, or a column containing text. Tables are extremely versatile and easy to create.

Important: HTML tags should not have a space after the bracket. The table tag below has one so that it won't be read as HTML code, which would make the tag disappear.

The first tag in your HTML code to create a table must always begin with the word "table".

You can then specify any of about a dozen attributes. If you don't assign a value, then the default will be used.

< table width="100%" border="2" bordercolor="#993366" cellpadding="15">

Other attributes include height, alignment, cellspacing, and background color and image.

To position elements horizontally, you have four options.

align="left"
align="center"
align="right"
align="justify"

To position elements vertically, you also have four options.

valign="top
valign="middle"
valign="bottom"
valign="baseline"

Cellpadding creates a margin between the elements and the border. Cellspacing creates a space between cells.

The values for height, width, cellspacing, cellpadding, and border size are given in pixels. If you don't want a border, your tag should include: border="none".
