Bandwidth: How Much Do You Need?

The web hosting plan, and the price you pay for it, will mainly depend on the size of your site and how much traffic it receives.

Any web hosting plan will allow a certain amount of disk space in which to store all of your website-related files.

The number of website visitors and the size of the pages they view determine bandwidth requirements. The total size of your website is not the critical determinant unless each visitor views each page. The greater the number of pages on your website, the less likely this is to happen.

Every time someone views one of the pages on your website, a data transfer equal to the size of that webpage occurs.

Suppose that your website is a single page, 10 kilobytes (10 KB) in size. One megabyte (MB) is equal to 1024 kilobytes.

So, if you have 10,000 visitors per month, the data transfer, or bandwidth used, would be just under 100 megabytes.

Some hosting plans offer bandwidth measured in gigabytes (GB). One gigabyte is equal to 1024 megabytes. That translates to over 1,000,000 kilobytes in one gigabyte.

If you had 100,000 visitors in one month who each viewed one page that was 10 kilobytes in size, your bandwidth transfer for that month would be about one gigabyte.

If you had twice the number of visitors viewing the same 10 kilobytes page, you would need a web hosting plan that offered two gigabytes of bandwidth.

Anything that a website visitor has to download will add to your bandwidth transfer. That includes graphics which can vary tremendously in size.
